The Intracoastal Waterway through town carries barge traffic, rental pontoons and center-consoles all sharing the same channel, and constant wakes work boats against their docks and lifts all day long. The mix of damage follows the mix of boats. Center-consoles that pound out to the Gulf show transom stress and chine cracks. Rental and heavily shared boats show impact damage, ramp strikes, prop-scarred hull bottoms from the skinny edges of Little Lagoon, and gunwale rash from operators who are still learning how a boat behaves around a dock. What the waterway does to docked boats
The ICW is the tell in Gulf Shores. Boats docked along it get rocked by barge and weekend wake traffic hundreds of times a day, so fender and piling contact wears through gelcoat in a season, and repairs there need harder wear surfaces than a quiet canal boat would get. I scraped bottom coming out of Little Lagoon and now there's a gouge in the keel. What will that run?
If it's into gelcoat only, $150 to $500. If the laminate is opened up, which is common on keel strikes in the lagoon's skinny spots, a proper hull section repair runs $500 to $1,500 with the boat on its trailer or lift. Either way, don't leave open laminate in the water while you think about it.
Our dock is on the Intracoastal and the hull side is chewed up from working against the pilings. Can you make that side new again?
Yes. We fair out the rash, repair any spots that have gone through the gelcoat, and refinish the side with a tinted match. For ICW docks we also reinforce the contact zones so the repair survives the wake action that caused the damage in the first place.
My deck feels spongy near the bow locker on our center-console. How do I know how bad it is?
We sound and moisture-test the deck, which takes minutes and tells us the footprint of the wet core. A contained spot repairs for $500 to $1,500. Widespread saturation moves into structural territory, $2,000 to $5,000 or more, but guessing is free, so get it tested before another season of water finds its way in.
Do you work on the older boats down in Bon Secour, or only the newer stuff?
The Bon Secour fleet is a regular part of our week, working boats and older cruisers included. Blister repair on hulls that never leave the river, transom work, and re-glassing tired decks. Older boats are usually more worth repairing than owners expect, and we'll tell you honestly when one isn't.
How far in advance do I need to book in summer?
Small dockside repairs usually fit in within a week or so, even in season. Multi-day structural jobs are best booked two to three weeks out in summer. Spring is the smart window for anything big, get it done before Memorial Day and the boat never misses a warm weekend.
